A Medigap policy also known as Medicare Supplements is a gap policy sold by private insurance carriers that covers the payments such as copays, deductibles etc. that are not paid by Original Medicare. Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare approved costs with the Medigap policy pays for most if not all the remaining costs.
AARP offers Medigap standardized plans A through N, most notably Plans F, G, and N along with exclusive benefits if you are an AARP member. Benefits that are offered are the Silver-Sneakers fitness program, AARP vision discounts provided by EyeMed Vision Care, and a Nurse Healthline. Although you may purchase a Medigap plan through AARP you are insured by United Healthcare.
To be able to purchase an AARP Medigap plan you must be a member in good standing. You can also sign up for membership at the time you sign an AARP Medigap plan. They offers a 1, 3, or 5-year term membership. Being a member could offer significant discounts other than Silver-Sneakers, AARP Vision Discount program and the Nurses Healthline.
Having an AARP membership can provide with travel discounts such as savings on hotel accommodations, airfare, cruises, and vacation packages. AARP also offers its members with health-related benefits such as dental insurance and prescription discounts nationwide. Other benefits you may be able to access through your AARP membership could include home-owners insurance, discounts for groceries, restaurants, legal services, roadside assistance and many more benefits.
SilverSneakers offers use of 13,000 participating fitness locations with access to exercise equipment, fitness classes and social activities.
AARP Vision Discounts saves you 30% on eyewear including bifocals, lenses and frames. Savings of 10% on disposable contact lenses and 20% on all other contact lenses. Other benefits are also included such as routine eye exams, eyewear purchases.
Nurses Healthline gives you access with registered nurses 24 hours a day and assists you with making the correct choices. Nurses will review your symptoms, make recommendations on treatment options, and refer you to medical doctors.
It is very important to purchase a Medigap insurance plan when first eligible because you will have access to a variety of plans, will cost you less, and not incur a penalty by Medicare. However, if you have group healthcare coverage through an employer you do not need to sign up for Part B or a Medigap plan and will not be incurred a penalty by Medicare.
To be able to purchase a Medigap policy you must have Medicare Parts A & B. You do not need to enroll in the Part D prescription coverage to purchase a Medigap policy, although you could incur a lifetime penalty by Medicare by not doing so at the time of your enrollment. AARP Medigap plans are “guaranteed renewable” if you continue to pay your premiums.

AARP rates are determined by using several factors such as the Medigap plan you purchase, your age, and or when you first enroll into Medicare Part B. Your rate can also be factored whether you are a smoker or non-smoker.
You automatically qualify for an AARP Medigap plan if you are within 6 months of your Medicare Part B effective date or you meet the guidelines in a “guaranteed issue” situation. You may also be eligible for an enrollment discount if your age at the time of your effective date is between 65 to 74 and you answer no to all the health questions on the application.
If you are age 75 to 76 and your Medigap effective date is within 10 years of your Medicare Part B effective date and you also answer no to all the health questions on the application. If you do not qualify for an enrollment discount check with your BGA broker for the rate you may qualify for.
There are 3 different group rates with either level 1 or level 2 tiers depending on age, zip code and medical health history. Group 2 rates are applied to individuals whose plan effective date are 10 years or more following their 65th birthday or Medicare Part B effective date.
In most cases you have “guaranteed issue” rights when you have certain types of other health care coverage that changes beyond your control, or you lose your healthcare coverage involuntarily.
When paying for an AARP Medigap plan it is best to use the “electronic funds transfer” option. That means paying electronically by having your bank forwarding your monthly premium automatically and saving you up to $24 a year.

Check with your BGA insurance agent for availability because not all states offer AARP Medigap plans under the age of 65 for Medicare disability recipients.
