Medicare Durable Medical Equipment

An older adult using a rollator while discussing Medicare durable medical equipment coverage at home.

Medicare Part B may cover certain durable medical equipment for use at home when the equipment is medically necessary and other requirements are met.

Questions to ask first

  • Has the treating practitioner documented that the item is medically necessary?
  • Is the prescription or order complete?
  • Is the supplier enrolled in Medicare, and does the supplier accept assignment?
  • Will Medicare rent or buy this type of equipment?
  • If you have Medicare Advantage, does your plan require a network supplier or prior authorization?

Coverage and your share of the cost depend on the item, supplier, setting, and coverage rules that apply to you. Confirm the details before accepting delivery.
